Yet another scam to watch out for. Skype calls

If this is a scam, the man might transfer stolen money into the account. He might ask you to send money to another account. He might ask you to wire the money out of the country. If you do these things, you are helping to commit a crime involving stolen money.

Call forwarding allows you to forward your incoming calls to another number. You can set it up to forward all your calls immediately. Or, you can set it up to forward if you don't answer the call, if your phone is turned off, or if you're out of signal range.

Call waiting and call hold are used together. If you receive an incoming call while you're on the phone, you hear a tone letting you know another call is coming in. If you answer the incoming call, the first call is automatically placed on hold. You can then switch between the calls, or join the calls using conference calling.

Tech support scams have evolved significantly over the past more than a decade. Early iterations involved cold calls from bogus technical support agents who were typically based in India and claimed to work for Microsoft, Dell, Cisco or another technology company, including well-known security vendors.

The bots mentioned above are just one type of bot to watch out for on Tinder. Many types of bots try to lure users into different scams. These bots can usually simulate a real conversation. However, after a short while, they will send you a link, asking you to visit it. The link usually sends you to an app, an online game, or some other online service.

Human scammers can create fake profiles with images sourced online and will often come up with elaborate stories about their fake lives. Once you match with a scammer, they will probably be very quick to suggest moving to another chat platform such as Skype. They may even ask to talk to you on the phone and suggest starting a more serious relationship.

Many people running a catfish scam will want to talk on other forms of social media as soon as possible so that you don't flag their Tinder account; somebody on Tinder asking for WhatsApp information is one red flag to watch out for. Be sure to put off speaking to someone on any other social media platform until you're sure that you can trust them.

There is also another version of this scam. The online date will want to eat at a specific venue and will rack up a huge tab that you have to pay for. After the date, you'll never hear from your match again.

"We have even seen instances where the Soldier was killed in action and the crooks have used that hero's identity to perpetrate their twisted scam," said CID Special Agent Matthew Ivanjack, who has fielded hundreds of calls and emails from victims.

Home warranty scams targeting seniors are skyrocketing, the report shows. Such schemes typically provide a callback number that captures the personal information of those who respond. First Orion estimates that U.S. mobile subscribers received more than 100 billion scam phone calls during the first six months of 2022. That resulted in financial losses of up to $40 billion.

An alternate money scam to watch for: They may send you money! This could rope you into a "money mule" scheme, whereby the scammer asks to deposit money into your bank account, distribute the funds to other people, or deliver packages. These requests could be tied to money laundering.

We were made aware of another telephone scam today, where a caller who purports to be a district court employee notifies an individual that he or she has missed a court date and a fine is being assessed. The alleged scammer then left a telephone number for a return call to an out-of-service number.

They disguise themselves on camera or use clever video technology to make photos appear to be live, so they can't be identified. One way or another, these scams have become so common that there is now even a section of Skype's community forum devoted to the subject.

Sugar daddy scams usually start with a direct message to the victim via Instagram, Facebook, or other social media platform. In my example below, it all started on Instagram. After the initial conversation, fake sugar daddies like to move the conversation to another, more private platform, like WhatsApp, iMessage, or another texting app.

As such, when a client asks to discuss work extensively off the platform, you should raise your guards. With the exception of quick Skype or Zoom calls to get to know one another or better flesh out the project, being asked to communicate off-platform should raise major red flags.
